Evi & Lindsey Messagie

Identical twins

One is mad about her job in advertising and a firm believer in edgy comfort, while the other lives a creative life and adores high heels. Evi and Lindsey may be identical twin sisters, but their personalities couldn’t be more different; a truth that is borne out by their lives, their jobs and their look. The two sisters are as complementary as they are contrasting. If you put them together there’s an immediate spark, especially if you add their children – Mona, Lily and Lex – into the beautiful and colourful mix.

Your jobs are very different. Evi, you work in advertising and Lindsey is a kindergarten teacher.

Evi: My job is to sort everything out. I’m a true ‘fixer’. The relationship I build up with my clients is central to this, and I am their point of contact in the company. Working in a highly organised way is very much my thing. I seldom leave anything to chance, neither at work, nor in my home life.

Lindsey: I’m a kindergarten teacher and I love being creative and constantly coming up with fresh ideas. I crave variety, and detest routine and repetition. I’m always devising new activities for the children in my class. For example, I might show them a new work of art every week, or let them listen to classical music. I know that this is a deviation from the norm, but after a while you really notice that they’re starting to look at things differently.

In your professional life, are you limited in terms of what you can wear, or do you feel comfortable wearing anything you like?

Lindsey: There are certain pieces that I won’t wear when I’m working. Delicate fabrics aren’t appropriate in a classroom, for example, but that doesn’t mean that I have to change my style. Although you wouldn’t expect this from a kindergarten teacher, I always wear high heels to work. One of the children recently came out with a theory as to why I do it: ‘Miss Lindsey wears high heels so that she has a better view of things.’ (Laughs.) That’s me: the teacher with the high heels. They give me confidence, as well as making me look elegant.

Evi: The cool thing about the sector I work in is that I can wear whatever I like. In advertising, you have a great deal of freedom. It doesn’t matter what shoes you’re wearing. You don’t have to wear a suit, and my boss isn’t the slightest bit bothered about my tattoos. My clients know me by now. If I’m going to a meeting then I will wear appropriate clothing, but the style is extremely casual. It’s great that everyone can just be themselves at work and can wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

Lindsey opts for heels and Evi likes to keep it casual. Or is there more to it than that?

Evi: I’m a bit of a tomboy. I often dress like a boy and rarely wear dresses or skirts. I do have a few, but 80% of the time I’ll be walking around in jeans. I simply don’t make wrong purchases; I wear everything that I buy. I love comfortable, bold clothes that feature prints or drawings. I especially like printed sweaters, which I mix and match with other pieces. It may not be obvious, but I’m very focused on creating a balanced look. I’ll combine a sweater with high heels and sneakers with a shirt to create a suitably feminine look.

Lindsey: I have far fewer clothes than Evi and I dress much more impulsively. This also ties in with our characters, I think. For example, I might put something on in the morning just because it happens to be fresh out of the wash. Evi is sophisticated and highly organised, but my approach is much less conscious. I love neutral colours, like black, dark blue and grey. And high heels are a must. They’ve been a part of my look since secondary school.

Has your style evolved over the years?

Lindsey: My style changed completely after my divorce. I threw everything away. I wanted to start afresh, to be someone else.

Evi: It’s exactly the same for me. I wanted to slough off that common identity. You are suddenly thrown far more back on yourself. I’ve gone back to being the Evi that I used to be before. But in terms of style, we’re totally different. Lindsey: That’s entirely true; although we do both take our red hair and pale skin into account when choosing an outfit.
